When your pension isn’t my tension!

A recent research done by Watson Wyatt reveals that companies, mainly from the Fortune 1000 list, are scrapping their defined benefit pension plans. According to the report, the number of companies which have terminated at least one plan, has increased from 71 in 2004 to 113 in 2005. Even the number of sponsors has declined from 638 in 2001 to 627 in 2005.

In the year 2000, when the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government decided to establish SEZs to boost the country’s ever lagging exports, the then Commerce Minister – late Murasoli Maran – was quite upbeat about its success. Speaking at the International Convention on Special Economic Zones, organised by FICCI (Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry) in March 2002, Maran termed his govern government’s decision to set up SEZs as one intending “to provide quantum jump to production for exports and consequent employment opportunities...”

The German economy(Publication and Research)

It is the third largest economy in the world. After experiencing a negative growth in 2003 and with the effects of external shocks lowering, the German economy is on its way to recovery with the support of its conventionally strong, competitive and innovative export-oriented industrial sector. The real GDP grew at a rate of 1% during the year 2004. OECD has projected that growth would be around 1.2% in 2005.

Now, as Mr. Landis rightly points out, the mere fact of a state’s diktat does not of itself make a thing into ‘money’: ‘Chartalism’ is indeed a flawed doctrine, as he reminds us. Substantial holding of gold- IIPM

Nonetheless though, we too own a substantial holding of gold, for reasons most recently set out in our 2004 Annual Letter to shareholders (www.sagecapital.com/edelweiss), and we have to demur with Mr. Landis upon several key issues. At the risk of over simplification, we should like to remind the reader of Jastram’s main conclusions, by citing the same passage as Mr. Landis, namely:
. Gold is a poor hedge against major inflations.
. Gold appreciates in operational wealth in major deflations.
. Gold is an ineffective hedge against yearly commodity price increases.

. Nevertheless, gold does maintain its purchasing power over a period of time.
